This Manuka is grown in the ancient Botanical Garden at the heart of the Tregothnan Estate in Cornwall, England. Tregothnan has been about growing and collecting rare plants from around the world since the 14th Century.
They have many rare specimens including this Manuka from New Zealand which they have been growing for over 100 years.
Terroir is as important for herbs as it is for tea. The same plant, and the same varietal can be grown in different places and produce incredible different complexities of flavour.
Our Waikato Oolong, for example, comes from plant stock that came originally from Taiwan, but it tastes remarkably different from our Taiwanese Golden Lily Milk Oolong - though the varietals are very similar. It's the same with wine, a Riesling grape grown in Austria will not taste the same as one grown in France, Germany or, indeed, New Zealand.
The same is true Manuka, part of the tea tree family. It is not often drunk as tea, certainly not for pleasure, in New Zealand where the flavour is extremely strong. But softened by the gentle Cornish climate for over a century, this Cornish manuka is remarkably soft and delicious. We believe it is the best you’ll find.
Renowned for its antibacterial and medicinal properties many Manuka products are coined 'superfoods' and we certainly think it is super. Manuka is certainly amongst the best caffeine free teas to enjoy as a warming winter reviver.
Its aromatic leaves are not only delicious as a loose leaf herbal tea, but also wonderful for smoking fish and ham and particularly delicious sprinkled over roast vegetables.
